Time to bite the forbidden Apple(iOS5)

October 4, 2011 Leave a comment

So, its 4th of July err 4th October 2o11. Well isn’t it the same thing for Apple fanboys out there.

iPhone Event

4/10/11 – Apple is holding media event at Infinite Loop, Cupertino, CA. The event starts at 10:00 am Pacific Time. Let’s talk iPhone.

Today, we would experience the World’s most advanced phone & OS – the iPhone4S(or 5) & iOS5, which is supposedly a giant leap forward from the existing World’s most advanced phone & OS the iPhone4 & the iOS4.

Every OS that rolls out of the Apple Inc. the most advanced OS in the market? Not really, if we look back at the earlier versions of iOS they lacked basic functionality like copy-paste.

So what is it about them that makes it the World’s most advanced OS be it mobiles/tablets(iOS) or the Macs(OS X). Well lets see it for ourselves because I believe in facts.

Well! That says it all, doesn’t it? I use every platform that is available in the market today from iOS, Android, BBOS, WebOS, bada, Symbian to WP7 so don’t consider me as an Apple fanboy.

I won’t deny, I love their products and simplicity but at the same time I pin point problems like ‘Death Grip’, Notification system, Micro-sim etc. I have always been an unbiased, critical blogger and iOS5 won’t change it for me.

Who are we kidding, we all know until we Jailbreak our iOS device’s they are not worth it. Right now out of all the devices I own, iPhone4 is my primary phone simply because of plethora of apps (I mean quality apps from the App store, not like malicious junk in the Android Market). So the big question is will the iPhone4 owners like me upgrade to iPhone5 when they can get the iOS5 on their existing device. Again lets dig into some facts.

For the past 6 months we have seen around 100 types of speculated iPhone5’s. From a larger screen to ipad-like back to LTE etc. This isn’t the first time the world has gone mental on how the next iPhone’s gonna look like. Before the next generation of iPhone is released today let’s have a look at some of the fake one’s.

Hence proved, you can run..you can hide..but you cant escape the Apple Inc.

Lastly, how it all started. The journey from iPhone4 to iPhone5.

Faccebook feels the Heat and adds Location Service

August 26, 2010 Leave a comment

Facebook is undoubtedly the leader when it comes to social-networking sites. But for people like me who are active on FourSquare certainly felt the need of something similar for FB. And if we users felt the need for it then its quiet obvious that the developers and geeks at Facebook too must have realized the need of it. So, the  FB  DEV Team decided to tie-up with Location based social networking leaders FourSqaure instead of wasting time and resources by starting from the scratch. But the sad news is that when I tried using this feature – Limited to the users of the US only will gradually roll out to other locations. Here are the screenshots of FB’s iPhone application with Location icon.

Apple – WWDC : Why We Do Care?

June 8, 2010 1 comment

WWDC –  One of the most prestigious event when it comes to tech. The first thing you would like to know is –  What is WWDC?

The answer to that question is – WWDC is Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) it is the premier technical conference for developers innovating with Apple technologies. Over 1,000 Apple engineers will be at Moscone West to present advanced coding and development techniques that will show you how to enhance the capabilities of your applications with the revolutionary technologies in iPhone OS and Mac OS X. But for me WWDC stands for – Why We Do Care ?

Not just that Over 5,000 of the world’s best and brightest Apple developers come together for the week-long Apple Worldwide Developers Conference at Moscone West, in San Francisco, California. This technical event provides you the opportunity to hear about the latest advancements in iPhone OS and Mac OS X through practical examples that you can apply directly to your app development. And trust a million others sit at home and read, tweet, blog about it.

One thing I fail to understand is WWDC (Why We Do Care) what Apple is doing? Has there ever been a time when Steve Jobs has launched something new and the World hasn’t gone hysterical about it, till the time its out in the market cos as soon we get our hands on to it we realise that nothing could have been dumber than this. Be it the most recently launched ‘Apple iPad’ while the people from all over the world were going gaga over it. I just passed one judgment about it and that explained everything about it. For me ‘Apple iPad’ is –  A dumber Macbook Air + A Bigger iPod Touch. You can’t call that silly bigger iPod Touch an invention. The only invention worth calling an invention was a sanitary pad or a writing pad but not iPad ever. And if anybody disagrees to it then please feel free to comment. I can mention everything about WWDC,the new iPhone,iOS4 etc but I am not going to waste my time on it as I am not a blogger who blogs what’s in the news or what will people read, I blog what I want people to know as the rest of the tech blogs are already doing the same job and I hate yellow journalism.

But for all those who really care about Apple WWDC, here are the best sources to know about it:

Thats all for now but will post more soon as we move ahead in the WWDC – Why We Do Care 😉

K.I.S.S. Guide To Jailbreaking – Iphone/Ipod Touch

I have got so many request on twitter on how to jailbreak an Iphone or Ipod Touch that now instead of mailing each one of you I am publishing the guide to jailbreaking. As its the K.I.S.S. guide to jailbreaking I will KEEP IT SHORT & SIMPLE :

First things First :

1)You should have the latest version of Itunes & .Net Framework 2.0 installed.

2) If these two are applications are already installed then install f0recast.

3)Once f0recast is installed attach your Iphone/Ipod Touch to the PC and run f0recast.

4) f0recast will check your iPods and iPhones to determine whether it is tethered, or unlockable and it will also specify the tool which will be needed to jaibreak your device.

5)After f0recast specifies which tool to use to jailbreak your device go ahead and download it. It can be any of the following tool : blackra1n Pwnage Tool redsn0w sn0wbreeze

6) I would suggest you to use redsn0w if you use Windows PC and Pwnage Tool for MAC.

7)Now its time to decide which firmware do you want to upgrade to latest being 3.1.3( prefer 3.1.2 at the moment) for the list of firmwares and download links visit here – Firmwares

8)Once you have downloaded the Firmware from here, open redsn0w and follow these steps –

  • Step 1: You will need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone/iPod touch by using the latest version of iTunes.
  • Step 2: In redsn0w browse to the Original iPhone OS 3.1.2 .ipsw file for your iPhone/iPod touch.
  • Step 3: redsn0w will now verify to see if the .ipsw is valid, and will then automatically patch the original file.
  • Step 4: iPhone 2G users can select both “Install Cydia” and “Unlock” options. iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPod touch users should only check on “Install Cydia” to jailbreak.
  • Step 5: Now make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer before you click “Next”.
  • Step 5 Continued: At this stage you will be presented with a screen where you will have to quickly hold “Power” button and then while holding the “Power” button, you will now have to hold “Home” button too. Now after few seconds release “Power” button but keep holding “Home” button until installation begins.
  • Step 6: Sit back and enjoy while redsn0w will do all the rest for you. Once done, your iPhone/iPod touch will restart automatically and you will find it jailbroken with iPhone firmware version 3.1.2.

PS: If you still think you don’t want to go ahead and do it yourself then you are most welcome to get it done for free by contacting me – NIKHIL CHAWLA

K.I.S.S. – KEEP IT SHORT & SIMPLE – N900 REVIEW

Everybody who knows me knows that the only device I would ever use for telecommunication is a Nokia, irrespective of whether it is a Nokia 5110 or a Nokia N900, it just has to be a Nokia. So when I got my hands on to the most powerful Nokia device known to man(Nokia N900) I was more than elated to express how it made go on a high. Though it was too short lived as just 7 exact minutes for Greek God of mobile phone’s doesn’t count at all but it was worthwhile as something is better than nothing. When I was handing the Nokia N900 back to my friend, the same line was going on in my head for which I was famous at s60 blogs when Kristina Ferrari & Raj Unny always used to refer my name with this line- ” Why do all good things come to an end?”

I wish had got more time to do R&D on Nokia N900 as its not available in India that I could have bought it and reviewed it but I am going to share whatever I could get grasp in those 7 minutes.

Here it goes:

K.I.S.S. N900 Pros:

  1. It’s a Nokia
  2. Maemo the future platform of Mobile OS
  3. ARM Cortex A8 600MHz CPU, PowerVR SGX graphics accelerator; 256 MB of RAM
  4. Contacts integration of Skype, Google Talk and other VoIP services
  5. WMV/RealVideo/MP4/AVI/XviD/DivX video player
  6. State-of-the-art Mozilla-based web browser with Adobe Flash 9.4 support
  7. 5 MP, 2576×1936 pixels, Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, Dual LED flash, video
  8. 3.5″ 16M-color resistive touchscreen of WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) resolution
  9. The Paranormic wallpapers are to die for
  10. FM Radio receiver, FM transmitter

K.I.S.S. N900 Cons:

  1. Not officially available in India yet
  2. No voice recorder, no MMS, and no handwriting recognition
  3. No smart and voice dialing
  4. Large and heavy
  5. Limited application availability
  6. Till more Maemo developers come in the league – its only going to be liked by Nokia fanatics or techies
  7. Resistive touch screen makes it hard to compete with the likes of Iphone and Nexus One
  8. Only available in Black colour
  9. Not enough integration with Ovi services
  10. Cant be updated to Maemo OS 6.0 in the future

I dont have more to share as its supposed to be a K.I.S.S. Review  but I promise to do a more in depth review of the Nokia N900 once I get it for review from some source(WOMworld,S60 etc) or once it officially available in India.

P.S. : For all those who don’t know about my phone’s – http://nikhilchawla.wordpress.com/my-phones/
