Faccebook feels the Heat and adds Location Service

Facebook is undoubtedly the leader when it comes to social-networking sites. But for people like me who are active on FourSquare certainly felt the need of something similar for FB. And if we users felt the need for it then its quiet obvious that the developers and geeks at Facebook too must have realized the need of it. So, the  FB  DEV Team decided to tie-up with Location based social networking leaders FourSqaure instead of wasting time and resources by starting from the scratch. But the sad news is that when I tried using this feature – Limited to the users of the US only will gradually roll out to other locations. Here are the screenshots of FB’s iPhone application with Location icon.

All you need to know about BADA

August 16, 2010 4 comments

Not many people know that Bada (pronounced /ˈbɑːdɑː/ not as Bada-Chota in Hindi) is a proprietary  mobile operating system developed by Samsung Electronics. It is designed to cover both high-end smartphones and lower-end feature phones. Samsung claims that bada will rapidly replace its proprietary feature phone platform, converting  feature phones to smartphones. The name ‘bada‘ is derived from 바다, the Korean word for ocean or sea. And that is the reason ‘Samsung’ named their first Bada device as Wave. So we can say that Samsung has created a Wave in the Ocean(Bada). And if the figure are to be believed they have already successfully done that as Samsung announced 83% net profit rise year-on-year in the second quarter to $3.6bln.

Wave in the Ocean(BADA)

Samsung announced the bada platform on 10 November, 2009. After the launch, companies such as Twitter, EA, Capcom, Gameloft, and Blockbuster showed their support for the bada platform. After the announcement, Wave S8500 was first shown in Mobile World Congress 2010 in Spain in Feb 2010. At that time tens of applications running on the first bada phone were demonstrated such as Asphalt 5 by Gameloft.

Samsung started to release SDK for bada to attract individual developers. During May 2010, Samsung released bada SDK 1.0.0b2, followed by 1.0.0b3 released in late May, 2010. In addition, Samsung started the bada Developer Challenge with a total prize of $2,700,000 (USD).

The first bada-based phone was the Wave S8500, released on June 1, 2010, and in its first 4 weeks on the market shipped one million handsets.

Before I tell you people more about how the Wave is on High-tide, have a look at the official 4D launch event for the Wave.

At the release day of the Samsung Wave, Samsung opened an international application store, Samsung Apps, for the bada platform.

In July 2010, Samsung Apps had 300 applications to offer, 70% of them being free. Samsung expects to have 7000 applications in its application store by the end of 2010.

Features of BADA

Even though bada supports a wide range of devices, bada is powerful enough to turn your imagination into powerful applications. With high end devices such as Wave, bada fully utilizes the power of hardware for the ultimate application experience. Even with mid-range or cost-effective models, it also provides powerful features for better application experiences.

Features such as plenty of UI controls, Flash support, and sensor support help applications to be more interactive. Service-centric features such as in-app-purchasing, SNS integration, and push notification help applications to offer customers a richer, more interactive experience.

Architecture for the Geeks

BADA, as Samsung defines it, is not an operating system, but platform with a kernel configurable architecture, which allows the use of either proprietary Real-time operating system(RTOS) kernel, or the Linux kernel. According to copyrights displayed by Samsung Wave S8500, it’s based on BSD, not Linux.

On top of the kernel, there are Device, Service, and Framework Layers respectively. Device Layer provides core functions of a device such as graphics, protocols, telephony, security, etc. Service Layer provides more service-centric features such as SNS, map, in-app-purchasing, and so on. To provide such features, Samsung operates, so called, bada Server, behind the scene. The top layer, Framework Layer, provides Application Programming Interface in C++ language to developers.

bada provides various UI controls to developers: It provides assorted basic UI controls such as Listbox, Color Picker, Tab, etc. In addition, it has a web browser control based on the open-source WebKit, and also features Adobe Flash, supporting Flash 9. Both WebKit and Flash can be embedded inside native bada applications. bada offers interactive mapping withPoint of interest (POI) features, which can also be embedded inside native applications. It supports pinch-to-zoom, tabbed browsing, as well as cut, copy, and paste.

bada supports various mechanisms to enhance interaction: various sensors, such as motion sensing, vibration control, face detection, accelerometer, magnetometer, tilt, and GPS, which can be incorporated into applications,is one feature and multipoint-touch is also supported.

Native applications are developed in C++ with the bada SDK, and the Eclipse based IDE. GNU based tool chains are used for building and debugging applications. The IDE also contains UI Builder, with which developers can easily design the interface of their applications by dragging and dropping UI controls into forms. For testing and debugging the, IDE contains a simulator, where apps can be run.

What to worry about?

As every tide has a High-tide it has a Low-tide too. Even though the Samsung Wave has broken all sales record there are a few things that Samsung need to address and consumer need to know :-

  • Bada’s application store is closed, and users are prevented from downloading apps from other sources
  • The external sensor API is not open-ended, preventing new types of sensors or unexpected technology developments from being added in the future.
  • The Bada application cannot access SMS/MMS inbox or receive incoming SMS/MMS notification.
  • Bada application framework only allows one Bada application at a time. Multitasking is possible between the base applications stored in ROM and one Bada application.
  • Some have speculated that the market is too crowded to accept a new operating system.
  • This may sound a bit lame but Maybe Samsung should look closer at the Bada name because the first three letters indicate what kind of idea this is: B-A-D.

My take on BADA

Bada looks like a solid smartphone environment and the Wave device appears potent — the phone runs on a 1GHz chip with an 800×480 resolution AMOLED display and can record video in 720p high-definition. Based on specifications alone, the Wave competes well with the latest and greatest handsets on the market. But is that enough to compete against the ever growing Android Devices by almost all the OEM’s (Except Nokia). What I perceive here is that Samsung doesn’t want to get lost in the herd with other OEM’s who are rolling out Android phone’s one after the another. So the war is not just with other manufactures but internally also as Samsung itself has Galaxy S (Android Device) competing with Wave(Bada Device). In the end, Bada as on OS and Wave as handset is a bold step by Samsung to hold its own niche market of developers and consumers so it wont be a surprise for me if it goes on to be  a hit.

Iphone 4 -> FaceTime = FacePorn

The porn industry is hiring girls to have live sex chats with Apple iPhone 4 owners using  its new video-call feature, it has emerged.

Using the iPhone 4’s Face Time , companies are developing video-sex chat services and are hiring workers through internet adverts in the US.

Many even offer to throw in a free iPhone 4 for the new employees.

FaceTime lets people call another iPhone 4 user and have live video conversations over a Wi-Fi connection through the phone’s camera and screen.

In one TV advert for Apple’s Face Time, a soldier uses the feature to get a look at his faraway wife’s ultrasound pictures.

But the adult industry wants its customers to share moments of an entirely different kind with its stars. And while the technology may be new, the idea is not.

In the 1970s, the demand for explicit videos at home helped VCRs become widespread, and the industry was the first to embrace DVDs, too.

Internet porn sites were some of the first to make wide use of streaming video and online credit card payments.

‘The first time someone created a camera there was someone who said, ‘Wouldn’t it be good for someone to take off their clothes in front of this camera?” said Michael Gartenberg from Interpret, a media research company.

And for years, cameras mounted on computers have helped connect people for racy online video sessions. But the portability and privacy of a mobile phone makes FaceTime a new frontier for the industry.

‘A phone is such an intimate thing, you usually don’t lend it out or have someone else use it,’ said Quentin Boyer, of Pink Visual, an adult production company.

He said his company began planning for iPhone 4 video services almost as soon as the device came out. They should be ready in a matter of weeks.

He said the company will offer FaceTime sessions with some of the same women who appear in its videos.

‘It has a very personal feel – your mobile phone to hers,’ he said.

The rise of FaceTime porn puts Apple in an awkward position. Its competitors have products that allow video chat, too – HTC’s Evo 4G phone, for one.

But Apple has made a point of keeping applications sold in its iTunes store clean.

Apple has rejected book apps for featuring sexual content and political satires for their potential to offend.

And last week it was accused of censoring its iBookstore by removing the risque short stories from its top ten list.

FaceTime is not even an outside developer’s app, but a main feature of the phone.

Watchdogs worry that FaceTime could connect children to pornography or predators. Parents can put computers in public areas of the home to supervise internet usage, but mobile phones go anywhere.

‘Unfortunately, both children and sexual predators are often ahead of parents when comes to technology,’ says Donna Rice Hughes, president of Enough Is Enough, a child safety group.

Apple said that people can choose whom they chat with and parents can turn off the FaceTime feature.

Another obstacle is that the iPhone 4 camera was designed specifically for face-to-face chatting.

‘You can have the phone on your face, or other body parts, but not both at the same time,’ said Teagan Presley, who acts in adult films and performs in video chats.

‘Most customers want the full package, and it’s going to be difficult holding a phone.

Apple – WWDC : Why We Do Care?

June 8, 2010 1 comment

WWDC –  One of the most prestigious event when it comes to tech. The first thing you would like to know is –  What is WWDC?

The answer to that question is – WWDC is Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) it is the premier technical conference for developers innovating with Apple technologies. Over 1,000 Apple engineers will be at Moscone West to present advanced coding and development techniques that will show you how to enhance the capabilities of your applications with the revolutionary technologies in iPhone OS and Mac OS X. But for me WWDC stands for – Why We Do Care ?

Not just that Over 5,000 of the world’s best and brightest Apple developers come together for the week-long Apple Worldwide Developers Conference at Moscone West, in San Francisco, California. This technical event provides you the opportunity to hear about the latest advancements in iPhone OS and Mac OS X through practical examples that you can apply directly to your app development. And trust a million others sit at home and read, tweet, blog about it.

One thing I fail to understand is WWDC (Why We Do Care) what Apple is doing? Has there ever been a time when Steve Jobs has launched something new and the World hasn’t gone hysterical about it, till the time its out in the market cos as soon we get our hands on to it we realise that nothing could have been dumber than this. Be it the most recently launched ‘Apple iPad’ while the people from all over the world were going gaga over it. I just passed one judgment about it and that explained everything about it. For me ‘Apple iPad’ is –  A dumber Macbook Air + A Bigger iPod Touch. You can’t call that silly bigger iPod Touch an invention. The only invention worth calling an invention was a sanitary pad or a writing pad but not iPad ever. And if anybody disagrees to it then please feel free to comment. I can mention everything about WWDC,the new iPhone,iOS4 etc but I am not going to waste my time on it as I am not a blogger who blogs what’s in the news or what will people read, I blog what I want people to know as the rest of the tech blogs are already doing the same job and I hate yellow journalism.

But for all those who really care about Apple WWDC, here are the best sources to know about it:

All thanks to @WOMWorld for giving me an opportunity to bring out the creative side of me after a long time. In fact, its got me all nostalgic as it reminded me of the days where we used to have weekly photography competition at blogs.nokia.com and every week we had to come out with a fresh and creative idea. Well, here I am again with my creation of how a flagship Nokia device will look like in ten years time #FutureNokia. So,I’ll let @WOMWorld and twitterverse be the judge of my creation – #FutureNokia – Nokia Eco: The most envoronment friendly phone ever to be made.

Reset Lifetimer of your Nokia Device

March 25, 2010 3 comments

Nokia Lifetimer is a counter that keeps track of the Total call time of your phone. It will show how much the phone has been used, and it’s the best thing to check if you’re planning to buy a used Nokia Mobile or when you plan to sell your’s at a higher price :p

To see the Total Call Time or the Lifetimer counter, On the standby screen type the following code *#92702689# (Easy way to remember this is – *#war0anty#). And it will pop up a message that shows the lifetimer in hours and minutes.

Here is a detailed procedure to make this lifetimer zero.

The following files are required to reset the lifetime:

  1. Nemesis service suite link: Download from Here
  2. Nokia Connectivity cable driver link: Download Here (This version of Nokia Connectivity is necessary if you are using latest PC suite)
  3. Lifetimer.pm file: See the download link down this post.
