  Leica S2 37.5MP uber camera gets price and release date
  

  TechNYK on the one camera to rule them all

  Leica has put the finishing touches on its new S-System camera, the Leica S2, and announced the full retail price and release date. We won’t beat about the bush – this camera costs a cool £15,995.

  If that figure just made you spray hot tea all over your computer screen in abject horror, then unfortunately you’re just not in the kind of photographic league Leica is aiming for. You might want to brace yourself for this one too: those 16,000 bones won’t even get you a lens. That’s just the price of the body.

  Leica explains that it doesn’t want to “just bundle an entry-level lens with the S2”, but would rather give consumers the choice of spending another few grand on their preferred lens. The cheapest, the SUMMARIT-S 1:2.5/70 ASPH, starts at £3,096. Suffice to say this is not the camera for taking holiday snaps.

  And if you’re feeling really flush you can spend £19,092 on the Leica S2-P with sapphire glass monitor and ‘platinum service’ support. We assume that means that if your camera inexplicably breaks down, Leica will instantly dispatch a new one to you. On the back of a rare eagle.

  So, why all the expense? Well, these are the specs: the Leica S2 has a 30mm x 45mm sensor which is 56% larger than you’ll find in other lowly DSLRs and provides staggeringly large, 37.5 megapixel images.

  Naturally, with such a large sensor, there’s a noticeable impact on the speed at which images can be processed (not to mention how many photos you can fit on a standard memory card). In fact critics have been, well, critical of the 1.5FPS shooting speed, especially in light of the price, although Leica has been quick to point out that “Speed was a primary concern”.

  In fact it gets away with it because the Leica S2 is class above other cameras.“We believe we will have the fastest autofocus in the medium format category, the fastest frame rate, and the fastest image processing,” said Christian Erhardt, Leica’s VP of Marketing.

  So if you’ve got a few grand tucked away and a house or two to remortgage and want to print a baby photo the size of a barn door, the Leica S2 might be up your street. It’s going to be available in October.

  Forty years ago today Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin forever changed mankind with their historic walk on the lunar surface. It was one step for a man but a giant leap for mankind.

  With today being the 40th anniversary, most of the web honoured the greatest moment in modern history.

  I apologise to my all my readers for my absence as I went into hibernation for a week due to unforeseen circumstances but now NYK is back with a bang so be ready for the feast.   Enough News for a week, now its time for some freebies to be distributed to all my loyal readers  and specially to animation enthusiast:

  

  Anime Studio is a proprietary vector-based 2D animation software for animators originally distributed by LostMarble, later by e frontier. The software comes in two different versions, named Anime Studio and Anime Studio Pro, the first being restricted in terms of possible length and image size, as well as not having all the functions of the Pro version. Anime Studio is available for the Windows and Macintosh operating systems.

  The software was originally developed under the name “Moho” by LostMarble, the last Moho version 5.4 was identical with the first release of Anime Studio Pro. Current release version is 6.0. LostMarble is still the home of Papagayo, a free lip sync software which works with Anime Studio.

  Anime Studio, despite what its name suggests, is also capable of other styles of animation. It can export its animations as flash cartoons, create cutout-style animation, and, within its restrictions, mimic some pencil-drawn animation. Since it features some basic 3D functionality, it can be seen as a 2½D program. Short films, especially those which tell their story in one scene, can be produced relatively quickly compared to other programs, because of the usage of vector morphing instead of frame-by-frame animation. On the 6th of June, 2009, Smith Micro released Anime Studio 6, which has more features, including motion tracking, lip-syncing and more.

  Features:

  • Anime Studio features layers of different types for artwork as well as for grouping and switching assets. Layers can be animated in perspective.
  • Layer ordering can be animated (since v5.6)
  • Camera movements.
  • Pressure-sensitive tablets in combination with brush shapes can be used to create natural-looking strokes. Artwork created in Anime Studio is basically resolution-independent.
  • The animator can create a skeleton of Bones to which pieces of artwork are attached. The skeleton works with inverse and forward kinematics and makes it easier to animate characters.
  • Tweening of all layer, vector shapes, and bone animation.
  • Styles for outlines and fills.
  • Masks are possible.
  • Anime Studio has some 3D abilities, useful for multiplane camera effects and even complex set building.
  • Anime Studio supports several file formats to import pictures and video. Alpha channels of PNG and video files are recognised.
  • Multiple soundtracks can be added. In combination with Papagayo Anime Studio provides automatic lip sync.
  • Anime Studio exports films to .swf, but without certain effects which are not part of the .swf file format. Export to video or image includes everything and can be done in any resolution. Videos can be rendered with an alpha channel.
  • Most tools are completely scriptable

  Because hackers target Microsoft’s Windows operating systems more than any other OSes, one could argue that it would be be fitting for the software maker to offer its users a free security suite, and that’s exactly what Microsoft intends to do. Noting the rapid increase in the prominence of malware, Microsoft says it will discontinue retails sales of it’s fee-based Live OneCare subscription service by June 30, 2009 and replace it with a free security suite currently code-named “Morrow.” I referred to the dictionary to find the exact meaning of the word “Morrow” – Its an English word meaning “the next day” (the morrow of the feast) or “tomorrow”

  “Customers around the world have told us that they need comprehensive, ongoing protection from new and existing threats, and we take that concern seriously,” said Amy Barzdukas, senior director of product management for the Online Services and Windows Division at Microsoft. “This new, no-cost offering will give us the ability to protect an even greater number of consumers, especially in markets where the growth of new PC purchases is outpaced only by the growth of malware.” Morrow, which will offer protection against viruses, spyware, rootkis, Trojans, and other malware, will be built to use fewer resources, which Microsoft claims will make it well suited for both low bandwidth situations and low-power PCs. According to Microsoft, Morrow’s protection will be on the same level as the company’s enterprise solutions. While that sounds like good news for Windows users, McAfee sees it as an even better opportunity for themselves and doesn’t appear worried that it might lose paying customers to Morrow. “Consumers have voted; OneCare, in its two years on the market, has achieved less than 2 percent market share,” he said in an interview. “Microsoft is giving up and has defaulted to a dressed-down freeware model that does not meet consumer security needs. This is good news for McAfee.” Is McAfee underestimating Morrow? Hit the jump and give us your thoughts. As far as my opinion is considered : Right now, Morrow is in test stage and as a Microsoft Employee, I was given a hands-on it  and it turned out to be a total blunder as after installing it I kept waiting for an hour for it to update the definition from the server,once the update was complete it crashed giving an unexpected error. I have given the feedback to the Developing & Testing team so hoping ‘Morrow’ is launched without the glitches and functions smoothly with Windows 7.

  All Media Box players are shipped with dual memory. We use a 1GB Nand Flash chip to store the players operating system, the PDF User Guide and the MP4 Video Conversion software. This is then accompanied by either 4, 8, 16 or 32GB of memory (depending on the version you purchase) for storing your media on. If you remove the above files from the player you can use the extra 1GB of memory for extra storage, so 4GB becomes 5GB and so on.

  The Media Box Touch has the latest capacitive touch button technology fitted. These work by sensing when your finger is over the button, so no pressure need be applied as there are no moving parts. The Media Box range also incorporates an automatic “Keyboard Lock” which safeguards against accidental button pressing when the player is in you pocket.
